Weekend links and photos

June 1, 2014 Aimee

June. And just like that summer has arrived. We’ve picked the first sweet cucumbers from the garden, the hens are laying regularly, and watermelon is an acceptable dessert once again. Yippee!

We have a giveaway winner to announce! Congratulations to Jori M who won a copy of The Nourished Kitchen. Jori said:

“We are members of a local organic CSA as a first step to eating in a more traditional way. I would love a comprehensive cookbook like this to help us get started!”

Jori, look for an email from me soon on how to claim your prize. A big thank you to all who entered.

Here’s a short list of what inspired me this week:

And here’s a snapshot of happenings around the urban homestead from the past week:

zucchini

Patiently waiting on the first zucchini. The garden has really appreciated the rain we’ve been having.

chia seed doughnuts

These vegan chia seed doughnuts from the amazing The Oh She Glows Cookbook made a great power snack last week.

Drinks in the garden

Late afternoon drinks in the garden after a long week. Wish you were here.

homemade rocket

20 minutes earlier this rocket was just trash in the recycling bin. Who needs new toys? Not this boy.

rhubarb harvest

Fresh picked rhubarb? Check.

rhubarb muffins

And with that rhubarb we made and loved, loved, these gluten free Rhubarb and Polenta Muffins from Kathryn. Only I used a little all-purpose flour, so technically, they were not GF, but just fine for our family.

kids campfire

Campfires are back. As are lazy afternoons sitting on a log and reading a book.

melon splat

Summer means watermelon by the plateful – and one slice is always waiting to jump and splat. Uh oh.

Have a beautiful Sunday!
